A Frugal Support Structure for New Software Implementations in SMEs
During software implementations, budgetary and human resource constraints often make it difficult for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to provide and maintain the required support. To overcome these constraints, this study describes a frugal support structure (FSS) to orchestrate available resources and to involve users as suppliers and co-creators of contextualized information. The FSS is conceptualized as a system that enables interaction and collaboration between the actors involved by using extant communication infrastructure wherever possible, systematizing and centralizing knowledge created and ensuring overall resource and time efficiency. Adopting a design science research process, development of the FSS combines a literature review and practical insights. Evaluating the challenges and benefits of FSS, the findings indicate that user involvement is necessary not only for contextualized and accessible support but to make support structures more frugal and sustainable in the long term
The roles of individual actors in data-driven service innovation â A dynamic capabilities perspective to explore its microfoundations
The increasing amount of data that can be collected from interconnected devices offers various opportunities for the co-creative innovation of data-driven services. It demands for the integration of traditional and new actors that have to deal with alternating roles. Using a modified Delphi method, this study takes a microfoundational view and investigates the roles of individual actors that together shape an organizationâs ability to innovate. By identifying relevant activities and their relative importance in the innovation of data-driven services, the study specifies nine actor roles and their contribution to organizational capabilities. The findings indicate that technical roles are less important than those that shape mindset and strategy. The paper contributes to current research on the utilization of data for service innovation by providing a microfoundational view of individual actors that helps to account for such higher-level phenomena as dynamic capabilities
Making Sense of the Sustainable Smart PSS Value Proposition
While academia attributes superior value potential to sustainable smart PSS (SSPSS), in practice, they are not widely implemented. To address this gap, we analyze how the notion of SSPSS value is constructed through sensemaking. Adopting a case study approach, we explore differences in organizational sensemaking. Moreover, we analyze how the three functional roles âdigital innovation and technologyâ, âsustainabilityâ, and âmarketâ involved in innovating SSPSS make sense of the value proposition. We conclude that value is subjective and the value proposition of SSPSS is multi-faceted. Each facet is constructed through the interaction of organizational, functional rolesâ, and individual sensemaking. At the organizational level, commitment, identity, and expectations influence the creation of shared meaning. At the functional role level, actors differ in their sensemaking based on the cognitive frames applied. At the individual level, subjective beliefs impact sensemaking. Hence, sensemaking is a multi-level process that raises the question of alignment

Supporting Participants in Creative Processes: Opportunities for Persuasive Technology in Participatory Design
Design workshops are a popular means of conducting creative processes in groups. There, individual and group-specific characteristics influencing creativity become apparent. The involved stakeholders are commonly non-professional designers, so motivation, ability and knowledge play an important role. For this purpose, persuasive technologies can be applied to support the participants. We conduct a multi-case study using observations of six workshops involving elements of participatory design and seven interviews with workshop moderators and participants working on creativity, design, or innovation. The data analysis enables us to identify behavioral and organizational issues. Building on this, we deduce potentials for persuasive technology in creative processes, especially in individual and group level as well as the creative process itself. Thus, this study contributes to information systems research by providing patterns of user behavior that can be targeted by persuasive technologies, i.e. information systems that can address and support user behavior as well as their creativity
